Evidence Preservation

The timely preservation of evidence is desirable because the reconstruction

may be limited if evidence is lost.  Skid marks or tire marks fade or disappear

over time.  The road may be changed or repaved and the vehicles may be

repaired, sent to a salvage yard or even crushed.

What to Preserve

Evidence preservation at the accident site includes tire marks, skid marks,

gouge and scrape marks, fluid stains, and debris.  At a typical inspection the

site measurements are completed with a total station survey instrument.

Survey measurements at the site allow the engineer to prepare a scale drawing

that can aid in understanding the environment in which the accident occurred.

Inspection and measurement sheets have been developed over time to aid

the engineer in the inspection of the vehicles.  The site and the vehicles are

also photographed at the time of the inspection.
